Ocean acidification (OA) is the name given to the ongoing decrease in the pH of the Earth’s oceans, caused by the uptake of CO<sub>2</sub> from the atmosphere. Roughly 30–40% of the carbon dioxide released by humans into the atmosphere dissolves into Earth’s oceans, rivers and lakes. Decreasing pH increases the ocean’s “acidity” which is widely thought to have a range of direct undesirable consequences such as depressing metabolic rates and immune responses of some mollusks. Another effect of OA is the increased difficulty for marine calcifying organisms, such as coral and some plankton, to form calcium carbonate and existing such structures have become vulnerable to dissolution. Shellfish larvae experience this same effect and subsequently significant losses have occurred to natural and aquacultured stocks. Ongoing acidification of the oceans poses a threat to the food chains connected with the oceans.
