A First-of-Its-Kind Conservation Achievement

Integrated-Aqua is proud to have supported an extraordinary wildlife conservation milestone at the Oregon Zoo, where Mazama newts recently hatched for the first time in human care.

The rare Mazama newt is found only at Crater Lake in Oregon, where invasive signal crayfish have dramatically reduced its population and disrupted the surrounding ecosystem. As part of an emergency conservation effort, Oregon Zoo has been working alongside the National Park Service and other conservation partners to establish a managed population and develop the knowledge needed to support the species’ recovery.

In July 2026, that work reached an important milestone when the first Mazama newt hatched at the zoo. Additional hatchlings quickly followed, representing a hopeful step toward protecting this unique species from extinction and, ultimately, supporting future recovery efforts at Crater Lake.
