Louisville Zoo Hellbender Salamander System

The Louisville Zoo is committed to the conservation and repopulation of vulnerable species, including hellbenders—giant aquatic salamanders housed and cared for within the Zoo’s facilities. Supporting a successful breeding program requires an aquatic environment engineered around the species’ unique biological needs while also meeting the practical requirements of animal care staff.

Working with Satchell Engineering & Associates, Integrated-Aqua developed a specialized Life Support System (LSS) for an eight-tank hellbender breeding system located within the Zoo’s back-of-house facilities.

The Challenge

The new system needed to provide stable, highly controlled water conditions while recreating key characteristics of a gentle river environment suitable for hellbender breeding and egg-laying behavior. At the same time, the design had to accommodate the husbandry team’s operational requirements and fit within the limited space available in the existing facility.

This required a compact, integrated solution capable of delivering dependable circulation, biological filtration, UV sterilization, and precise temperature management while remaining accessible for routine operation and maintenance.

The IAS Solution

IAS provided a modular, pre-engineered system designed to simplify onsite installation while delivering the level of environmental control required for this specialized application.

The system included an Integrated Culture Module, featuring the culture tanks and associated plumbing pre-mounted on a structural rack. IAS also supplied an Integrated Filtration Module incorporating a bag-filter sump with an integrated bioreactor, circulation pumps, UV sterilization, heater, and a heat exchanger system.

The system was preplumbed and packaged prior to delivery, minimizing field assembly and helping streamline installation within the Zoo’s constrained back-of-house space.

Critical LSS functions were designed around the needs of the animals and husbandry staff. Controlled water movement helps simulate the gentle river conditions required by the hellbenders, while UV sterilization supports water quality management, and precise heating and heat-exchange capabilities allow the system temperature to be carefully maintained.

The Louisville Zoo hellbender system demonstrates how purpose-built life support technology can support demanding conservation, propagation, and aquatic research applications. By integrating culture tanks, filtration, disinfection, circulation, and thermal control into modular packages, IAS was able to provide a compact solution tailored to the facility, the husbandry team, and the biological requirements of the animals.
