Kansas City Zoo Sobela Ocean Aquarium
Project Description
The Kansas City Zoo Sobela Ocean Aquarium, which opened in 2023, is a 650,000-gallon facility home to nearly 8,000 animals representing over 200 species, including sea otters, sea turtles, sharks, and a giant Pacific octopus. Spanning six zones and 34 habitats, the aquarium showcases how ocean currents connect marine life across the globe, providing an immersive and educational experience for visitors.
To support the aquarium’s diverse ecosystems, Integrated-Aqua supplied 13 HEX™ Drum Filters, including two X5-7T models capable of handling 2,400 GPM each for the 265,000-gallon Pacific Reef tank exhibit. Serving as the main filtration systems, these drum filters deliver efficient solids removal while reducing energy consumption, water usage, and maintenance needs, ensuring crystal-clear water and reliable system performance.
Complementing mechanical filtration, 11 BioE™ Biofilters provide robust biological filtration, maintaining stable water chemistry across habitats and supporting the health of a diverse range of species within the aquarium. Additionally, SITA UV Sterilizers were installed in the back-of-house quarantine system to enhance pathogen control and safeguard both new arrivals and resident animals.
Together, these systems deliver reliable performance, energy efficiency, and a sustainable approach to aquatic life support, demonstrating how Integrated-Aqua’s expertise helps world-class aquariums operate at peak performance while promoting animal welfare and environmental stewardship.
