

Technical Training at Integrated Aqua Systems
For the two interns hosted by IAS, the experience centered on practical shop and systems fabrication skills directly relevant to the equipment and infrastructure used throughout commercial aquaculture and Aquatic Life Support Systems.
Working alongside the IAS technical team, the interns gained experience using shop tools and safety equipment, fabricating components, making parts, and assisting with the construction of integrated aquatic systems. The goal was not simply to observe the manufacturing process, but to participate in a professional shop environment and build the practical skills required to safely and effectively contribute to real-world projects.
This emphasis aligns closely with the internship program’s focus on facility and gear operations and maintenance, which represents the largest portion of its recommended on-the-job training. The program also incorporates aquaculture science, conservation and management, safety and emergency preparedness, and business skills to provide a well-rounded introduction to the industry.
From Internship to Employment

For IAS, one of the most rewarding outcomes of the summer was seeing that training translate directly into a career opportunity.
Following the internship, IAS hired one of the participants as a Shop Technician I. They are now continuing their development through IAS’s internal training process with the goal of becoming a certified IAS Shop Technician.
That transition reflects one of the central objectives of programs like this, connecting motivated students with employers while creating a more skilled workforce for aquaculture and related aquatic industries. The internship program itself emphasizes the value of expert mentorship, transferable technical skills, professional networking, and pathways into long-term industry careers.
Investing in the Future of Aquaculture
Aquaculture, fisheries management, aquatic research, and aquatic life support all depend on skilled people who understand not only the biology of aquatic organisms, but also the equipment, infrastructure, safety practices, and operational disciplines required to support them.
IAS was proud to contribute to the MiraCosta College TCI Aquaculture Internship Program this summer. Our team enjoyed working with both interns, sharing the technical knowledge behind the systems we build, and helping provide practical experience that can serve as a foundation for careers in the aquatic industries.
As the industry continues to expand, partnerships between educators, government programs, and companies like IAS will play an important role in developing the technicians, operators, and aquatic professionals needed to support its future.
