Integrated Aqua Systems recently completed the successful commissioning of a state-of-the-art water filtration and disinfection system for the historic Kerckhoff Marine Laboratory (KML) at Caltech. Established in 1929, KML is one of the oldest marine research facilities on the West Coast, designed to foster world-class marine biology research. Inspired by the renowned Stazione Zoologica in Naples, Italy, this laboratory has played a pivotal role in advancing marine science. As KML approaches its centennial anniversary, IAS is honored to support the laboratory's mission with cutting-edge water management solutions that meet the rigorous demands of modern marine research.
IAS was contracted to design and supply a fully integrated system to provide filtered and disinfected seawater for Caltech's marine biology students and faculty. This comprehensive system includes our Integrated Filtration Module (IFM), featuring an X-series drum filter housed within a pre-engineered HDPE sump tank. The compact design ensures optimal space utilization, energy efficiency, and automated operation. A monitoring and control unit (MCU) enables seamless automation and real-time data reporting on flow rates, temperature, and system status, ensuring precision and reliability for critical research applications.
To ensure consistent performance, IAS incorporated dual redundant MDM Sequence series intake pumps, complete with commercial-grade basket strainers and Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) controls, to deliver raw seawater to the 20-micron drum filter. The pre-filtered water is then polished through Hayward FLV series 5-micron bag filters and disinfected using high-output polyethylene SITA UV sterilizers before being returned to the laboratory’s head tank on the third floor. A Hayward MV series pump, governed by a proportional-integral-derivative (PID) control program, precisely maintains the system's water levels. This multi-stage process ensures the delivery of pristine water essential for KML's groundbreaking research initiatives.
The IAS team carried out comprehensive startup, commissioning, and training sessions to ensure seamless operation and maintenance of the system. This collaboration underscores IAS's commitment to delivering innovative, turnkey solutions for research institutions worldwide. By integrating modern engineering with a historic facility, IAS enables KML to continue its legacy of excellence in marine science, providing Caltech researchers with the tools they need to tackle the challenges of today and tomorrow.
